Özyeğin University is a foundation university established in Istanbul in 2008 by the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation. It is ranked as the 7th best university in Turkey in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation index of the Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology in 2015.

IEEE Özyeğin University Student Branch (IEEE OzU) was established in the academic year 2013-2014 as one of the 1430 student branches of IEEE, the world's largest professional and technical organization, through the efforts of the students of Özyeğin University's Faculty of Engineering.

Career Talk Events are a series of events organized by the IEEE Özyeğin University Club under the supervision of Dr. H. Fatih Uğurdağ. These events provide university students with the opportunity to learn from our graduates and industry professionals, who share their experiences and provide insights into their respective fields.

27) Suha Akyol

In our Career Talks series, our guest this time is Suha Akyol!

I am Suha Akyol, born in 1964 in Samsun. I graduated from Kabataş Erkek Lisesi and Bogaziçi University with a degree in Electronic Engineering. In addition to my engineering background, I completed a 2-year Contemporary Management education at Marmara University to start my career. I began my career as a software specialist in the information and communication sector, providing technical solutions. Later, in 1995, I continued as a Sales Manager at Samsung Electronics Turkey office, focusing on the sales of electronic communication technology products and solutions. In 1998, I served as the General Manager of a local company distributing telecommunication products. From 1999 onwards, I worked for Nokia Networks for 18 years, taking on high-level responsibilities in the sales of mobile communication network products and services in different markets. In 2017, I joined the telecommunications sector and started producing software solutions through research and development at Argela Technology. I began my assignment as the Country Manager for Ethiopia and continue as the Director of International Market Business Development in Istanbul. I am married and have a 27-year-old son named Mert, who graduated in Electronic Engineering from Özyeğin University and worked as an artificial intelligence specialist in Toronto, Canada. My 22-year-old daughter, Aslı, is currently a 3rd-year student in Chemical Engineering at Boğaziçi University.

One topic that interests university students the most is climbing the career ladder and embarking on their life journeys. I am excited to share my experiences and insights gained from my 35 years of work experience in the technology field and discuss "Technological Career Trends and Opportunities" with you on April 8, 2022.

26) Taylan Akdoğan

In our Career Talks series, our guest this time is Taylan Akdoğan!

You are all invited to our event on Saturday, February 26, at 19:00.

Taylan Akdoğan received his bachelor's degrees in Electrical-Electronics Engineering and Physics from Boğaziçi University in 1995. In 1998, as a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh, he contributed to the discovery of Tau Neutrino in the DONUT experiment at Fermi National Laboratory. He then obtained his Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics, specializing in pion production through neutron-proton interactions, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2003. From 2003 to 2004, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the BLAST nuclear physics program at the MIT-Bates Laboratory. There, he continued his work as a researcher and experiment coordinator in experiments studying the electromagnetic structures of nucleons. In 2004, he was promoted to a full-time researcher position at MIT. He has been involved in numerous neutron physics experiments at the Los Alamos Neutron Accelerator Center. In 2006, he joined Boğaziçi University as an assistant professor and was subsequently promoted to associate professor and professor in 2008 and 2013, respectively. His research focuses on experimental nuclear and particle physics and computational physics. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Boğaziçi University from 2014 to 2016. In 2018, he joined Özyeğin University and currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

25) Tezer Ünal

In our Career Talks series, our guest this time is Tezer Ünal!

You are all invited to our event, which will take place on Saturday, December 4, at 19:00.

Tezer Ünal is the CEO and co-founder of Softeal Information Technology, a company that provides specialized Fleet Management Systems solutions to high-end companies operating in the logistics sector. Although he initially worked in foreign trade and trade finance in the early years of his career, he later continued his career in engineering; as they say, "the fox eventually returns to its furrier shop." In this conversation, he will share the experiences gained over 35 years, the decisions made at career crossroads, and their outcomes with aspiring young engineering candidates eager to plan their futures and fulfill their dreams.

Tezer Ünal graduated from TED Ankara College in 1982. In the same year, he also served in the Turkish National Star Basketball Team, representing his country in the Balkan and European Junior Basketball Championships, and played basketball for Eczacıbaşı Genç and A Basketball Teams. After graduating from Boğaziçi University's Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1986, he completed the master's courses at the Boğaziçi University Department of Economics in 1988. After working in roles such as Product Manager, Deputy Finance Manager, Systems Analyst, Project Manager, IT Director, Sales and Marketing Manager, and Department Director at expert and promising firms in the industry in our country, he founded Softeal Information Technology in 2009, where he became a partner and Chairman of the Board.

Softeal specializes in Fleet Management Systems and partners with Turkey's most prestigious and largest logistics companies. Although management is his primary duty, as he considers being involved in the operational side of the business as a hobby, he enjoys working on new algorithms whenever he gets the chance, developing software by sitting in front of the computer at night, testing new heavy-duty vehicle models when they are released, reading ISO and SAE protocol documents related to communication protocols, finding faults in products of branded companies manufacturing in the field, and reverse engineering on vehicle CAN bus systems.

Whenever he has the opportunity, he voluntarily gives awareness presentations to young people, serves as a role model, and ultimately finds happiness in impacting people's lives.

24) Figen Ceceli

In our Career Talks series, our guest this time is Figen Ceceli!

You are all invited to our event, which will take place on Saturday, May 1, at 19:00.

Figen Ceceli will be sharing her journey over three decades of global development. Discussion includes the ups and downs of building leading-edge, transformational solutions; why diversity and inclusion matter for strong results; and what keeps her love for innovation going strong.

Figen served in various executive roles in technology delivery, product management, and competitive strategy at JPMorgan Chase, Comcast, Comverse (Amdocs), Sycamore Networks, Onpath, Brocade, and Formation. She has led teams across the USA, Europe, and Asia to deliver highly resilient software, infrastructure, and customer-facing solutions. Her latest projects include building an API Marketplace for open banking, Application Modernization, and Cloud Transformation for on-demand scalability and multi-cloud portability. Previously, she has designed solutions exceeding 99.99% uptime for web-based Customer and Operational Management, IP/Optical/Mobile and Telephony Networking, Storage Systems, Switching Systems, Monitoring and Control Systems, and Real-Time Billing.

She has an Electrical and Computer Engineering background (Master's from the University of Delaware; Bachelor's from Bogazici University).

23) Haluk Konuk

In our Career Talks series, our guest this time is Haluk Konuk from Silicon Valley!

You are invited to our event, which will take place on Saturday, April 10th, at 19:00.

Mr. Haluk will share his experiences in chip design and testing and his career mostly spent in Silicon Valley. He has worked for 20 years at Broadcom, where most chips that handle almost all the world's internet traffic are designed. He conducts research at Palo Alto Test Technologies, a recently founded company.

He will discuss various life experiences, ranging from pursuing a master's and doctoral degree in the United States to testing billions of transistors and billions of connections for the reliability of each chip in a matter of seconds and even real estate investments.

After graduating from Kadıköy Anadolu High School and Boğaziçi University, Haluk Konuk worked at Netas for a year and then went to the United States for a master's degree on a Fulbright scholarship. After obtaining an MSc. from Case Western Reserve University, he worked at CLSI for two years near Washington, D.C. He later pursued a Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has worked as a technical director at Hewlett-Packard and, most recently, at Broadcom. He has numerous publications and holds nine patents.

22) Silicon Alps

This time, we continue our Career Talks series by adding a highly interactive and new event!

On Tuesday, March 16th, at 19:00, we will have our event in English, and our guest will be Silicon Alps!

Our guests are from Silicon Alps, from Austria, the Silicon Valley of Austria. The event will be moderated by Ms. Elisabeth Berghold (H.R. & Business Dev. Manager).

Silicon Alps is a cluster consisting of 110 companies and other institutions. A public/private partnership brings together industry players, academia, and public authorities to establish a sustainable high-tech hub focusing on the microelectronics and associated software sectors. Silicon Alps is in two locations in Austria, Carinthia and Styria, which are 100 km apart.

21) Tarcan Kiper

We continue our Career Talks series with our guest Tarcan Kiper on February 27th at 19:00!

Tarcan Kiper graduated from the German High School in 1981 and received his Bachelor's in Electrical/Electronics Engineering from Boğaziçi University in 1986. He also earned his Master's in Electronic Engineering and Applied Physics from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio, USA) in 1990.

He is the CEO and co-founder of Dors Venabili CyberSpace Technologies Inc., which develops V.R. and AR-based technologies in the digital health field. He served as the Chairman of the Board of infoTRON Inc., a company he co-founded between 1994 and 2015, and as a Board Member of ArtıDoksan Inc., another company he co-founded between 2004 and 2015. He also held the positions of General Manager and Board Member positions at KaleTRON/KaTron Simulation, Defense and Space Technologies Inc., a company he co-founded, from 2005 to 2010. For nearly three decades, he has been involved in 3D computer graphics, virtual reality, simulation, and simulator technologies, which are his areas of expertise.

20) Şirin Aktaş

We are coming to our first event as WIE (Women in Engineering) with a guest who can inspire you! Our guest is Şirin Aktaş.

The event will take place on January 22nd from 14:00 to 15:00.

Şirin Aktaş started her professional career as a Network Engineer at Garanti Teknoloji after completing her undergraduate and master's education in Computer Science Engineering. She then continued her career at Koç.net, Turkcell, and Unilever. She gained experience in project management, product management, application architecture, and I.T. management at various levels and in different countries, allowing her to experience much vertical and horizontal expertise.

Currently, she serves as the IT Director responsible for Turkey, Central Asia, and Iran at Unilever, continuing to generate solutions for digitalizing all business units and employees and supporting them with technology. Throughout her 18-year I.T. career, she has worked with numerous sectors, individuals, associations, and organizations from the business world, adding value as a technologist and solving their problems. She has also completed her doctoral studies at our school, Özyeğin University.

19) Hasan Sözer

Our Career Talks series continues! Our next guest is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözer, the Department Chair of Computer Engineering!

He will be with us on Sunday, December 20th, from 17:30 to 18:30.

Hasan Hoca completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Bilkent University and worked as a software engineer at Aselsan. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Twente in 2009, he worked as a research assistant at the same university for two years. Since 2011, our esteemed guest has been serving at Özyeğin University, conducting research in software engineering, software reliability, and software architecture.

18) Turgay Aytaç

We continue our Career Talks with our guest Turgay Aytaç on Saturday, December 12th, at 19:00.

Mr. Turgay completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in Industrial Engineering at Boğaziçi University and has held management positions in the IT industry for many years as an entrepreneur and founder of various companies. He is one of the founders of Logo Software. He is currently developing investment strategies based on machine learning and natural language processing.

Logo Software (Logo Business Solutions) is still among Turkey's largest independent software producers, providing products and services with enterprise resource planning functions to over 180,000 customers in Turkey and other significant regions.

17) Reha Civanlar

We continue our Career Talks with Prof. Dr. M. Reha Civanlar on Saturday, December 5th, at 19:00.

He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at METU and then went to the United States for a doctorate at NCSU. After holding various positions at laboratories such as AT&T and Bell between 1991 and 2002, he taught as a visiting professor in the Computer Engineering department at Koç University. Dr. Civanlar, who has more than 40 patents, contributions to international standards, membership in Sigma Xi, and numerous running medals, started his role as the founding vice rector at our university and continues to serve in this position.

16) Gökhan Kul

We continue our Career Talks with Gökhan Kul on Sunday, November 29th, from 18:00 to 19:30.

After completing his education at TOBB and METU, he continued his academic career in the United States and worked at various universities. He worked as a software engineer at Simsoft Computer Technologies for a while. Currently, he serves as the Associate Director at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Cybersecurity Center and as an Associate Professor in computer engineering. In our event, he will share valuable information about how to pursue a master's degree in the United States, find scholarships, and progress in a career.

15) Remzi Sanver

We continue our Career Talks with Remzi Sanver on November 28th at 19:00.

Remzi Sanver, who serves as an editor in prestigious scientific publications of Economic Theory, is also a member of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare Board of Directors. His scientific activities have been recognized with awards by the Turkish Academy of Sciences and the ODTÜ Mustafa Parlar Scientific Research Foundation. Prof. Dr. Sanver, who speaks English, French, and Spanish, is the founder of the Murat Sertel Center for Advanced Economic Studies, which was established at Istanbul Bilgi University in 2010. He served as the Rector of Istanbul Bilgi University from 2011 to 2015. Currently, he is Deputy Chairman of the BİLGİ Board of Trustees and Research Director at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France.

14) Dr. Haluk Reşat

Dr. Haluk Resat is a Program Officer at the National Institutes of Health, Office of the Director, Office of Strategic Coordination (NIH/OD/OSC), where he helps to integrate data from multiple Common Fund programs within the Common Fund Data Ecosystem. Previously, Dr. Resat was a program director in the Division of Biophysics, Biomedical Technology, and Computational Biosciences (BBCB) at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). In this role, he managed research and training grants in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, mathematical biology, systems biology, and biotechnology areas. Before joining NIH/NIGMS, Dr. Resat was an associate professor at Washington State University at the Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering. He has also worked as a senior research scientist at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and was an associate professor at Koç University in Turkey.

Dr. Resat earned a B.S. in physics and electrical engineering from Bogaziçi University in Turkey and a Ph.D. in physics from Stony Brook University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, and the University of California, San Diego.

13) Sadık Nejat Ezer

Sadık Nejat Ezer graduated from Saint Joseph French High School in 1985 from Boğaziçi University with an M.S. in E.E. in 1992, working for Prof. Bülent Sankur and Prof. Emin Anarım. His MS thesis was on the Pattern Recognition of airplane images. He worked at Boğaziçi University as a teaching and research assistant until 1995 while continuing to take the E.E. Ph.D. coursework in Image Processing and Pattern Recognition. He immigrated to Australia and worked at MITS for two years as an S.W. engineer in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems. He then immigrated to the USA in 1997 as an H.W. Design Verification engineer at Silicon Graphics (SGI). After four years in SGI, he worked in two startup companies: 7 years in Tensilica, known for its customizable Xtensa configurable embedded microprocessor core, then two years in Steam Processors specializing in the design of high-performance digital signal processors for applications including video surveillance or video conferencing. He has worked at Apple Inc as a Design Verification Manager since 2009. He has been happily married for 25 years and has two children; his son studies Theater and Environmental Science at NYU, and his daughter studies Psychology at UCSC. He loves swimming, skiing, reading, listening to classical musing, and learning foreign languages.

The career talk will be centered on how he shaped his career, first in Australia and then in Bay Area. With more than 27 years of experience in Design Verification, he will talk about the state-of-the-art methods in the area.

12) Ali Akoglu

Ali Akoglu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the BIO5 Institute at the University of Arizona. He is the site director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), Industry-University Cooperative Research Center on Cloud and Autonomic Computing, regarding designing and developing architectures for achieving self-management capabilities across the layers of cloud computing systems. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Arizona State University in 2005. His research program focuses on high-performance computing systems and non-traditional computing architectures. His research projects have been funded by the National Science Foundation, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Office of Naval Research, U.S. Air Force, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories, Army Battle Command Battle Laboratory, and industry partners such as Nvidia and Raytheon.

The career talk will be centered on how to get admission from a reputable U.S. university for M.S. or Ph.D. in E.E., or C.S. Prof Akoglu will talk about what he looks for in a good candidate. This part of his talk will take place between 11:30-12:00. And between 12:00-12:30, he will give the below seminar.

11) Gökhan Göğüşoğlu ve Dr. Zafer Yıldırım

Gökhan Göğüşoğlu (BSEE, MSEE, and MSCS) graduated with honors from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Yıldız Technical University in 1985. He also completed his master's degree in the same department in 1987. Later, in 1992, as a scholar of the Ministry of Education, he pursued his second master's degree in computer architecture at the Department of Computer Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in the United States. Gökhan initially pursued a doctoral degree in the same department before starting a career in SAS programming (Statistical Analysis System). He is a black-belt SAS programmer and has been working in the healthcare sector for a long time, holding managerial positions. Currently, he works as an "Application Development Manager" at ActiveHealth Management, a subsidiary of Aetna, one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States. During his speech, Gökhan will share his adventure of going to America and some details of his 30 years spent there.

Dr. Zafer Yıldırım (M.D., MS, and Ph.D.) is a medical doctor who will also be present at our university along with Gökhan Göğüşoğlu. Although he is not an engineer, he was undecided about pursuing engineering when he entered university. Since career topics are closely intertwined with people's life stories and Zafer Bey has an interesting life story, we have also asked him to share his life story with us. Zafer Yıldırım ranked 21st in the university entrance exam when he entered Hacettepe English Medicine in 1982. When he graduated from Hacettepe Medicine in 1988, he was also a highly successful professional tourist guide and held certification from the Ministry of Tourism. For about two years, he worked full-time as a Japanese guide. In 1990, he suddenly decided to pursue a Master's degree in Immunology at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine in the United States. Later, Zafer Bey completed his Ph.D. in the same field and at the same university. He took the TUS (Specialization in Medicine Exam) in the United States and specialized in Internal Medicine in Michigan. He then pursued sub-specializations in Oncology and Hematology in Vermont and Intensive Care in Missouri. From 2004 to 2018, he worked as an oncologist in Oregon. Dr. Zafer Yıldırım has spent time with his family in Istanbul for approximately 1.5 years and plans to continue his medical career in the United States from where he left off in 2020.

10) Dr. Göktürk Poyrazoğlu

The guest of this Career Talk event is Dr. Göktürk Poyrazoğlu. He received his bachelor's degree in Electrical-Electronics Engineering from Yeditepe University in 2008. After completing his bachelor's degree, he conducted engineering studies on electrical system designs and installation of electrical installations for industrial organizations in Russia and Turkey for three years. He obtained his Master's in Electrical Engineering from The State University of New York at Buffalo in 2013 and his doctoral degree in 2015. After completing his Ph.D., he researched as a scientist at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory (MERL) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), contributing to studies that will shape the changes in the electric power industry for the next 30 years. He studied energy markets, smart energy solutions, power transmission line planning, and energy consumption management. He contributed to the scientific basis of the policy set by the Massachusetts Department of Energy for the installation of a 200 MW energy storage system in the state in 2020 with a study titled "The State of Energy" conducted in collaboration with Alevo Analytics, a company based in Charlotte, USA. Since September 2017, he has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering at Özyeğin University, teaching courses on "Energy Systems," "Power Systems," and "Optimization for Engineers."

In this event, he will talk about his university choice, the choices he has made so far in his career, the changes in his career and their effects, the topics he is currently working on, and his future goals. He will share his experiences and discuss the principles and values that a university student should possess. He will also answer your questions.

9) Osman Doğan Yirmibeşoğlu

The guest for this career talk event is Osman Doğan Yirmibeşoğlu. He graduated from Özyeğin University in 2014 with Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering degrees. Afterward, he was accepted into the Robotics Master's program at Oregon State University, and he is currently pursuing his Master's degree in Robotics at the same institution.

During this event, he will discuss his university choices, his decisions throughout his career, the impact of those changes, the current topics he is working on, and his future goals. He will also share his experiences and discuss the principles and values a university student should possess. Additionally, he will answer any questions you may have.

8) Dr. Hande Argunşah Bayram ve Dr. Buğrahan Bayram

The Argunşah couple graduated from Bahçeşehir University's Faculty of Engineering in 2005 and then completed their Master's in Technology Management at Kent State University in Ohio. In 2007, they started their Ph.D. studies in Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland State University and graduated in 2013. For six uninterrupted years, they worked as full-time researchers on various projects at Cleveland Clinic. They were later accepted into the prestigious postdoctoral research program at the Kessler Foundation and moved to New Jersey. They returned to Turkey through TÜBİTAK's Returnee Research Scholarship Program and have served as faculty members in the Department of Medical Engineering at Acıbadem University since February 2015.

The talk will focus on career opportunities in the field of Biomedical Engineering.

7) Tarcan Kiper

Tarcan Kiper is one of the founders of Infotron and Katron companies. Currently, he serves as the CEO at AUGMEA. AUGMEA is a company located in Teknopark Istanbul and is a partner of Crytek, working on virtual reality, military simulation, and game engines.

The talk will focus on virtual/augmented reality career possibilities.

6) Tolga Turan

Tolga Turan currently works as the Deputy General Manager of Turkcell Energy Systems. He worked at the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) for 12 years. In 2017, he took on the role of part-time lecturer at Özyeğin University in the Law Department, teaching Energy Markets.

5) Onur Başkırt

Onur Başkirt has worked at companies such as Ericsson, Huawei, and Teknosa. For the past year, he has been working as a Software Test Manager at Kariyer.Net. In this event, he will discuss his university choices, the changes in his career, and the impact of these changes. He will also discuss the topics he is working on and his future goals. Onur will share his experiences and discuss the principles and values that a university student should possess. He will also be available to answer your questions.

4) Çağla Öğrünç

Çağla worked at FIBA IT for about two years and has been working at Deloitte for a while now. She will also be available to answer your questions.

3) Barlas Karahocaoğlu

Barlas Karahocaoğlu worked at Huawei for approximately 1.5 years, where he was involved in developing Service Delivery Platforms for telecommunications companies. He is part of the Monitise MEA (Pozitron) team, where he works on backend server software for applications such as İşCep, Bilyoner, and CepteTeb. At this event, he will share his industry experiences and expertise in "Mobile Application Development" and "Secure Coding." He will also be available to answer questions.
